Eating be eating, b'ain't it, Birdie?''Nay, Uncle Bear: In Caermelor, at the Royal Court, they be so-oh, so much more advanced than anywhere else. 'Tis not done to wipe your fingers on your hair or the tablecloth, or belch, or speak with your mouth full of food, or scratch, or pick your teeth at table. Ye have to use little forks to pick up the food. Ye not allowed to pour wine for your betters or for yourself, but to wait for them to deign to pour it for ye, if they be feeling generous. And the carving of the meats must be done a certain way, and as for the toasts-it would take ye a whole day just to learn the complications.' Takes the fun out of eating, ' observed Sianadh. About This Quote

In this quote, Sianadh is talking to her uncle Bear, a Caermelor from the time when they were in Caermelor, before they were taken to Irth. She's telling him how things work in Irth and he doesn't understand it. He's a bit of a primitive in his thinking and people haven't advanced so much in Irth yet so she explains to him that in Irth people don't really have to do all the little things that they have to do in Caermelor. In Irth they can just sit down and eat whenever they want without worrying about their manners or not being able to use their hands properly. She says that it takes the fun out of eating when you have to worry about all the little things that people have to worry about when they're eating in Caermelor.
